Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 and AX 2012 R2 – Out Of Support

As of 9th October 2018 Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 and AX 2012 R2 are officially out of support, with Extended Support ending in 2021. But what does this mean for users?


What does it mean?

The end of Mainstream Support means that Microsoft has now stopped updating and working on the Dynamics AX 2012 RTM and 2012 R2 product. Microsoft will no longer enhance the product, security updates and non-security hotfixes will no longer be supplied, and the warranty claims will end. However Mainstream Support for Dynamics AX 2012 R3 will stay in place until 2021.


What’s the big deal?

So if your platform is still working then what’s the problem? The problem is that sooner or later you’ll encounter performance issues and you need to plan for that now. One of the biggest risks is the possibility of compromising security. With no fixes or updates in place you could potentially be running your business platform with known security issues. This has wide reaching implications, for example data breaches and GDPR regulations.


So what do I do?

Don’t panic, you have options:

  • Purchase an extended support agreement
  • Pay for a custom support contract
  • Upgrade
  • Extend the life of your current platform
